Make sure your rabbit's cage will be big enough when it is fully grown.

The best diet for your rabbit is rabbit pellets. You can also give your rabbit alfalfa hay and a salt block. Some fresh vegetables can make your rabbit ill, so check with a vet or other expert for advice. Rabbits need fresh water, which should be changed every day. Rabbits can sometimes misbehave, so make sure the food and water bowls are too heavy for your pet to knock over.

Some people train their rabbits to use a litter box. They also let their pet roam inside—after rabbit-proofing the home, of course. Make sure no loose dogs, cats, or other pets will threaten the safety of your rabbit.

Pay special attention to your rabbit’s toenails. They may need to be trimmed by a veterinarian because they grow rapidly. To prevent overgrown teeth, give your rabbit hay, straw, and blocks made of hardwoods to chew.

To avoid behavioral and health problems, pet rabbits should be spayed or neutered. If you get your rabbit from an animal shelter or rescue agency, this may have already been done for you.
